Scientific conference titled: “The most prominent minds of Albanian culture: Anton Xanoni and Justin Rrota”

The Faculty of Social Sciences in collaboration with Research Albanological Institute of Shkodra University and the support of the Austrian Honorary Consulate held the scientific conference titled: “The most prominent minds of Albanian culture: Anton Xanoni and Justin Rrota”. This conference took place at “Jup Kastrati” Conference Hall of the University Library on 19.12. 2014.
Prof. dr. Fatbardha Hoxha in her opening speech, conveyed thanks and appreciation for the speakers and the participants in that important scientific event. The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof.as.dr Mimoza Priku stated: “We are gathered here today to remember two of the most prominent figures of Albanian culture, Anton Xanonin and Justin Rrota. This scientific conference organized by the Research Albanological Institute and the support of the Honorary Consulate of Austria is organized in the framework of many scientific activities organized by our University. Therefore Shkodra continues to remain an important center of scientific research of Albanian nation".
Anton Xanoni (1862-1915) was a writer and author of many textbooks. He was born in Durres, but since his childhood he moved from Shkodra where he took the Catholic education. It was further educated in religious institutions in Spain (Valencia), Dalmatia (Kraljevic), Italy (Cremona), Poland (Krakow) where he was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1892. He returned to Albania in 1894. He served as a cleric of the Albanian language teacher in Severian College. He is famous for many works he had written and many initiatives he had taken.
Justin Rrota (1889-1964 ) . He was a philologist and a linguist. He pursued theological studies in Austria and he was ordained a priest in 1911. He worked as a teacher of Albanian and Latin language for about 25 years at “Illyricum” high school in Shkodra . He has a great contribution for many published works in which was treated Phonetics, Lexicology, Morphology and Syntax of Albanian language. In 1929Justin Rrota brought for the first time in Albania three photographic prints of the “Missal" written by Gj. Buzuku and constantly dealt with the study of the language of this work. He ahs also published several articles which addressed the historical and cultural circumstances.
