POLAR SELF PORTRAITS - poetic connections between faces and spaces climate change in contemporary art

PSP,

Polar self Portraits (PsP) is an international arts project about climate change through art. It is curated by Zsuzsanna Ardó, award-winning artist, and produced by Creatives without Borders.

After experiencing the High Arctic through her work on an expedition ship, Zsuzsanna developed a new framework for a new series of works inspired by her Arctic experience: Polar self Portraits – the artist and the curious case of the vanishing ice caps.

This creative journey considers the dynamics between the (perceived) centrality of the self and the (perceived) peripheries of the planet, the polar regions – and creates connections between them.

This visual expedition also explores the relationship of two iconic art genres: the landscape of the face – the self-portrait –and the face of the land, otherwise known as the landscape.

How can we re-imagine the boundaries of classical genres in the context of climate change?

Given the urgency and relevance of this theme, Zsuzsanna decided to open up her PsP project, and to work with a polar scientist as well as to invite fellow artists to consider their interpretation. This theme sharing through the PsP project has produced very different creative interpretations, entering into dialogue with Zsuzsanna’s own work and with each other.

The digital edition of this project, a video installation, is engaging audiences in an art museum in Ilulissat in the Arctic (Greenland) at the British Antarctic Survey’s BAS stations in Antarctica, in Albania in the Balkans, in London, and in Asilah in Morocco, Africa.
